Plan B(ron) turns into Plan A

Written by MerschFlyers at 04:15 2/3-2023

Sacha's crash in stage 3 of Monta Rosa was of course a big blow. He dominated the group sprint in stage 2 for a 3rd place - would have been first but the Flyers didn't set up to chase a break, same mistake as Jawlat. All the eggs for the race were in Sacha's basket for stage 2 and 5, but he'd broken them all. The team was ready to go home when Cruz commented "LeBron is actually faster on the track than Sacha and you know, stage 5 is pretty flat". Everyone turned to LeBron, Sacha, then DS Kevin. And that was the nod - plan b: the team would go all in for LeBron in stage 5. When it came to the day, even Sacha put in a turn at the front despite his injure, before LeBron lit up the front, winning easily. One extra race training point made LeBron's sprint into the team's first incredible skill level!

Suddenly, flat sprint tactics looked different. Plan Bron became plan A for flat sprints. After years of supporting at Gotland, LeBron was given the captain role and put Flyers on podium. Secrets will feature LeBron as captain too before the hillier Lanark is led by Sacha.

With two sprint captains - LeBron for flats and Sacha for hilly days - plus Desire as a potential future sprint captain too, the team needed to re-evaluate the overall strategy. Teo, in top form, got a couple podiums and nearly so, but that would require top form and the climb support is clearly not Div 3/4 level. The leadout train is there or close, with capacity to be incrementally improved. So the big decision has come - Flyers will go all in on sprints for the next few seasons, rotating through a 2-3 captains and fleshing out the leadouts to support them.
